I'm poor as can be since I've been unable to work sincebut haven't been able to get disability. Sending apologies into the ether about not paying. I'll purchase when I have money. Until then, I've hopefully made up for it by having my works lifted and not paid for. Oh, and the driving fast with a vehicle that you can feel the road in to re-align.
Spot on. Yes, horrible habit that'll get me. But spot on. I used to ride my motorcycle and bicycle at very high speeds. It was so terrifying yet I was calm and at peace at the same time.
I'm up to page 18 and notice something that I hope comes up later. My trauma started before I was able to individuate so trauma is all I know. I can't give the descriptions Tom is giving because I never got to be a person on my own before the abuse. Wonder if I'll try to read it any more????? Not being able to focus on a book is one of my current problems. I found the high speed driving line striking as well. Driving at regrettably dangerous speeds used to be one of the only things I could do to truly clear my head.
It was as much the danger from the possibility of one of the inflicted injuries making me lose control as it was testing my skill and ability to remain calm. When I started to wobble at mph one day I toned it down and was grateful I didn't have to change my shorts. Opened it up and finished chapter one today. Details didn't stick very well but I wasn't having any trouble reading and did not get a headache from reading! That hasn't happened in years.

The last time I saw a therapist because I had symptoms that just weren't lining up with where my psychology was, she said something about how the body remembers and reacts even though the brain doesn't.
Which sounds a lot like the thesis of this book. I hadn't heard this until several years in to therapy and suddenly realized why my body reacts so strongly to certain situations. Even just hearing that made me feel better. Can't wait to learn more about that. This book was so helpful to me. I went through so many therapists think I was just depressed, anxious, and bipolar. Traditional therapy wasn't working and it actually made my symptoms worse.
It helped me find something that did work and accept what I was feeling. I can't recommend this enough. My trauma will always be there but it's a lot more tolerable than it used to be. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy. All rights reserved.
